In His Own Words: Six Songs on T’s Playlist

T’s first big assignment of middle school is to create a presentation about six songs he likes.

Although there were tantrums – including a massive meltdown Saturday night – to get the work done, T did a great job with his slideshow.

The hubby said that T is better at using PowerPoint than him. 😊

The slides showed T’s creativity, including photos of him doing favourite activities.

Tonight, we’re practicing his delivery – so he can do a good job presenting it to his teacher and class later this week.

We think his explanation for why he picked each song was very thoughtful.

So I’m delighted to share the stage with T for this post – and I delightedly present to you: T’s playlist.

A Song That Brings Back A Memory

“As Long As You Love Me“ by Justin Bieber

I like this song because it’s from when Justin Bieber was younger and closer to my age. It has a good beat and a good vibe and I like listening to it.

A Song That Makes Me Happy

“Outside” by Calvin Harris (Featuring Ellie Goulding)

I like this song, because it makes me happy. It has a good beat and puts me in a good mood. I also love spending time outdoors camping with my family.

A Song That Makes Me Sad

“Way Down We Go” by Kaleo

This is a song I used to hear on YouTube videos when people were having sad moments. I like the sad and serious sound.

A Song That Makes Me Dance

“DLMD” by Darren Styles & TNT

I love this song because of the beats and energy. It does not have a lot of words but a lot of beats that makes me want to move.

One of My Favourite Songs Now

“Kings and Queens” by Ava Max

This song gives me roadtrip vibes. I like listening to it when taking long drives to New Brunswick each summer to visit my grandparents. The photo from the cover page is from my visit there this summer.

A Song That Represents Me

“Duu Du Duu Du” by Blackpink

This is a fun song even though I don’t understand all the words they’re saying. I like the beats and that the song is about being confident and not letting people underestimate you.

  2. Well I am officially out of touch with the music scene because I’m not familiar with any of these songs, and the only artist I’d heard of was Justin Bieber. 😂 When my girls were young, I kept up with their music but not any more.

    Even so, well done to T for choosing these songs and being able to articulate why he chose them!

    1. Thanks Michelle. I’m with you – I only recognize 1/2 the artists, which is nice to me, cuz he’s finding his own groove and sound in life. 😊🙏 And I’m comfortable now with my age to not have to keep up with him! 🤣

    1. Thanks Ganga. We’ll see how it goes. Work refusal is an ongoing challenge and we often face resistance, tantrums and meltdowns. I think it’s a manifestation of anxiety.

      So practicing last night was a challenge. But having said that, he did a wonderful job with his presentation, when we were finally able to get him to focus. So I have faith he’ll do well in the live setting. 🙏 I’ll let you know how it goes!

  4. WOW!!!!!!!! although, I am not familiar with most of the songs, I thought T’s descriptions of why he liked them was stellar! And YAY for that teacher who is using high interest assignments to teach the kids public speaking and presentation skills! Great photo of T fitting right in at the table of classmates! 💖 V

    1. Thanks Vickie. I thought he did a great job with the assignment too – and agree that these are great assignments for kids to express themselves and also build writing and public speaking skills. 😊🙏

    1. Thanks Pete. I too only knew half of them. 😊 I agree it’s a great assignment to help build speaking skills as well as for the kids to get to know each other better. Week 3 is so far so good. 🙏🤞🏻

  7. i love this assignment and glad you were able to work through it. i probably sounded like way too much at the beginning, but he did an amazing job of it. i like his picks, but i especially like what he liked about each one. so well done.

    1. Thanks Beth. I thought it was a clever assignment too to get them to express their personality and creativity. 😊 On the actual slide, each song also included a photo of T doing a preferred activity. It’s a nice way for the students to also get to know each other. 🙏

        i think it also helps them to feel comfortable expressing opinions without judgement, self-reflection, presentation, and all kinds of language arts skills

    1. Thanks Bama. Yes, I only knew half of them – so it’s nice to learn new things from my kid. 😊 Presentation dry run was a bit rough last night but here’s hoping he’ll do better in the actual setting.
