Spring Break

The alarm went off at 4 am and T shot out of bed like a cannonball. He was ready to leave for the airport before the hubby and I.

I had been up by 3 am after two hours of sleep. I couldn’t sleep from both excitement and anxiety.

We had booked this family trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic back in September.

The thought of a getaway gave me the motivation to get through the ups and downs of the last few months.

When the Omnicron wave hit in December, I gave up hope our trip would happen. Then things started opening up again.

But I didn’t want to celebrate or talk about this trip until our plane landed in fear I’d jinx it from happening.

The week leading up to our trip was a gauntlet. Four busy work days mixed with three medical appointments for my mom and the unexpected curveball of T being sent home with a runny nose and cough Monday morning.

He was asked to stay home from school all week. Not only did it add homeschooling to my already packed week, but the anxiety of missing out on our trip stressed me out.

Thankfully, he was not sick with COVID and his cold went away two days before we left.

Friday was a long travel day and T was off-the-wall excited.

We arrived before dinner and the sun was setting. That didn’t stop T from wanting to squeeze a short swim in before the pool closed.

Having had weeks of frigid Canadian winter weather, jumping into a pool in nothing but a bathing suit was a treat!

The last two days have been wonderfully uneventfully relaxing.

We slept in till 9 am every day, had breakfast, spent the morning at the amazing waterpark in the resort, chilled out and napped in our room after lunch while T played on his Switch, and spent the late afternoon at the beautiful beach.

I didn’t realize how mentally and physically exhausted I was until I didn’t have to think about or do anything other than let go of everything and relax.

I know these seven days will fly by and I am going to focus them on doing absolutely nothing but having fun with our T.

    1. Thank you, LaDonna! And greetings from the airport. We’re on our way home. Sad it’s over but super grateful for the seven days away from reality. 😊

Hope you are doing well and taking good care.

  1. Congratulations Ab on a much needed overseas Travel Adventure. Punta Cana is beautiful. T for sure will have the unforgettable time in Paradise. Savor each day and collect as much happiness. Have an amazing time my Friend. Regards.

    1. Thank you! We were saying last night how much we needed this and it’s so true. I wish this could last forever but it wouldnt called a vacation if it does!😆

      1. That’s my dream too, a vacation that last forever. I think it is possible, we just have to find a way to make it happen some day. I’m so glad you and your family took this trip. It’s a priceless blessing.

  2. Oh my goodness – that looks awesome!! I love knowing you are getting a week away – it’s so well-deserved! And I’ve always heard from my meditation teacher that when we overload our central nervous systems, we can settle in to the calm better. I hope that your extremely busy week last week has the same effect of making it even MORE fun to relax this week! Sending all my best wishes for a FANTASTIC time!

    1. Thank you, Wynne! We are having a blast and it really so nice to just get away and as you say to settle the calm in my overloaded central nervous system.

I hope you are doing well and that your week is off to a great start too!

    1. Thank you, Linda! I am still in a bit of denial we made it. But very thankful it worked out as planned. We really needed this break. 😊It is like a completely different world here but we’re still being cautious with the mask wearing in indoor dining spaces (we seem to be the only ones!). Hope you enjoy your week ahead.

      1. It’s been hard to plan ahead during the pandemic, especially when it comes to travel, and I’m glad it’s worked out for you! It’s always nice to get away and get a change of scenery, especially when that scenery involves warm weather and a beautiful sandy beach. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and please keep sharing pictures so I can live vicariously through you.

      2. We were on the edge of our seat all week as the flight day drew nearer. I am hopeful for you that come summer for your West Coast trip it’ll be more straightforward. I felt very safe during the airport, flight and over. Its like a different planet here. We’re the only family I can see that still wears masks for indoor dining. I imagine it’ll be even more back to normal by your trip! It’ll be here soon and then I’ll live through you and K!

      3. I’m counting down the days! We actually just booked a last minute trip to visit Vancouver Island over Easter for ten days. I can’t wait. Glad to hear that you felt very safe at the airport and on the flight. We’ll probably continue to wear our masks on the plane and when taking transit or in other crowded areas. I’d rather be safe than sorry. It feels a bit too quick to kick all the restrictions to the curb just yet.

      4. Vancouver Island over Easter sound amazing! It will be here before you know it. And I agree with you wholeheartedly on the mask. Better to be safe than sorry.

  3. Wow, what hectic days you had before the trip! I’m glad in the end all worked well. Enjoy the rest of your relaxing stay in the Dominican Republic, Ab! After all the exhausting things you did, you deserve this break. Walking on a proper beach without having to worry about time is such a luxury many of us city dwellers can only have a few times (or even less) every year.

    1. Thank you, Bama. I’m very thankful it worked out ok because it was getting harried in the beginning of the week. 😊 And yes, we feel very grateful to enjoy a proper beach vacation because we know it’s a luxury for us city folks!🙏

    1. Thank you! It’s definitely a beautiful spot. We were first and last here in 2005. If definitely is a different experience with a young and very energetic child!😊
